Between 1985 and 1997 the retail price of petrol and diesel increased by 141% and 126% respectively. Over the same period the consumer price index increased by some 300%.
The petrol price on 30 June 1997 is lower than the 1996 price despite increases in taxes and railage rates during the year of some 4c/l. The components of the petrol price are shown in Appendix 7.
Allowing for tax and railage increases the diesel price has only risen by 1c/l during the year.
