Foreword by the Minister of Minerals and Energy

The petroleum industry powers the nation’s transport; empowers the people and partners the State in its goals of social and economic upliftment. Petroleum products fuel factories and meet domestic needs. By products of liquid fuels also create wealth in sectors ranging from agriculture to manufacturing, from cosmetics to food. The petroleum industry is vital to South Africa’s economic growth.

The South African Petroleum Industry Association (Sapia) is delighted to present its 2004 report, the Association’s eighth. This report describes the striking evolution of the industry as well as the changes the short-term future will see.

Sapia encourages an understanding of the industry’s contribution to economic and social progress. In addition, the Association is a voice for systematic and stable transition of the industry, for the greater good of the country.
