The South African Petroleum Industry Association (SAPIA) continues to
monitor with concern the high level of violence and intimidation related
to the current strike action in the road freight industry.
The
intimidation of drivers and depot staff has seen certain regions
becoming no-go zones. In a number of instances, this has disrupted fuel
deliveries resulting in low stock levels. There have also been reports
of certain retail sites running dry.
SAPIA remains in close contact with our members to gauge the supply and distribution situation.
Petroleum
companies have put contingency plans in place, however, due to the
violent nature of the current transport sector strike, activation of
these contingency plans is not always possible and supply disruptions
may still occur in certain areas. The safety of drivers and employees
remains paramount and all necessary steps are being taken, by the
petroleum companies, to protect their staff.
While respecting the
right to strike, SAPIA calls on workers to act with restraint and for
union leadership to hold members accountable, for their actions.
Following the recent round of negotiations we are hopeful that an amicable agreement can be reached soon.
